Florida Golf Cart Insurance: Do You Need It?
If you drive a golf cart on public roads in Florida, you may need insurance. Here's what Palm Beach County owners need to know.
Golf carts are everywhere in Palm Beach County — from The Villages-style communities to coastal neighborhoods where residents run errands without ever starting a car. The rules around insuring them depend on how the cart is registered and where it is driven. Standard golf cart vs. Low-Speed Vehicle (LSV) A standard golf cart in Florida tops out around 20 mph and may only be driven on designated roads with posted speed limits of 35 mph or less. A Low-Speed Vehicle (LSV), sometimes called a street-legal golf cart, has a top speed of 20–25 mph and must be titled, registered, and insured like any other motor vehicle. What coverage should you carry? Liability for bodily injury and property damage to others. Medical payments coverage for you and your passengers. Comprehensive and collision to repair or replace the cart itself. Uninsured motorist coverage if you ever cross paths with a vehicle on the road. Why your homeowners policy is not enough Most homeowners policies provide very limited liability for golf carts and only while the cart is being used on the insured premises. Once you cross the street to visit a neighbor, that coverage usually stops. A dedicated golf cart policy is inexpensive — often under $200 a year — and fills the gap properly.
